IBM plans OpenShift on Z deployment for IntelliMagic Vision
The proposed architecture would replace a Windows and SQL Server dependency with containers running beside IBM Z performance data, while adding forecasting and an anomaly-explanation agent.
IBM is planning to make Red Hat OpenShift on IBM Z one of two deployment paths for IBM Z IntelliMagic Vision, moving the performance-analysis product away from its historical dependency on a dedicated Windows Server and Microsoft SQL Server environment.
The plan is a statement of direction, not a delivered release. In an IBM announcement published Aug. 17, the company said it intends to support both IBM Z Container Extensions, or zCX, for lightweight deployments and Red Hat OpenShift for IBM zSystems and IBM LinuxONE for organizations already operating OpenShift on Z. IBM explicitly says future-product plans may change or be withdrawn and should not be treated as a delivery commitment.
Bringing the analytics to the data
IBM's existing model commonly transfers SMF and RMF performance records from the mainframe to Windows and SQL Server infrastructure for processing, storage and reporting. The planned OpenShift architecture instead puts IntelliMagic Vision's reporter and data-processing components into pods, stores the records on OpenShift persistent volumes and runs ClickHouse in a dedicated OpenShift project, according to an Aug. 31 engineering post describing the two architectures.
That post says the OpenShift option is intended for enterprises with an existing cluster on IBM Z or LinuxONE, while the zCX option targets organizations that want a smaller container footprint without a full container platform. Both designs are meant to keep the analyzed data on the Z system and remove the Windows Server requirement. IBM also plans to retain a hosted option for customers that prefer IBM to operate the software.
For OpenShift platform teams, the meaningful change is operational rather than cosmetic: IntelliMagic Vision would become another stateful workload governed by the cluster's existing security controls, storage and operational tooling. The design also eliminates a cross-platform file-transfer step, but organizations would still need to evaluate the new pods, persistent storage and ClickHouse project as production dependencies when IBM publishes supported configurations.
Forecasting and an Explain agent
The same direction includes planned long-term forecasting for capacity and workload trends. IBM says IntelliMagic Vision would use historical patterns, recurring behavior and seasonal trends to help operations teams estimate future CPU utilization and infrastructure needs.
IBM is also validating an “Explain” agent intended to investigate anomalies, traverse relevant performance insights and summarize likely contributing factors. The Aug. 31 post says it combines IBM Research algorithms with IntelliMagic Vision's IBM Z domain knowledge. IBM has not published a release date for the OpenShift deployment, forecasting enhancements or Explain agent.
